Jacek
Korbus was born in 1971 in Lublin. He completed education in the
Secondary School of Art in Lublin, i the speciality of art exhibition.
After that, he studied at Maria Curie Skłodowska University in Lublin,
at the Institute of Art Education, in the scope of sculpture, in the
years 1990-1995. I had the honor to be his supervisor. His
intelligence, exceptional sensitivity to form, understood as the act of
creation, and his invention expressed in searching for new creative
concepts, made him truly outstanding. His final diploma project
consisting of both sculptural compositions in various materials and
written thesis, was recognized as one of the best in the recent years,
and the author was awarded with a prize by Head of Maria Curie
–
Skłodowska University in Lublin.
Despite
serious problems and unforeseen difficulties that he had tu struggle
with in his private life, having graduated from the University, he was
ruthlessly determined to develop his artistic experience and to enrich
the scope of his activity as an artist, through his profound artistic
pursuits.
In
the years 1996-1997, Jacek Korbus completed an internship at the
Institute Superieure Libre des Arts Plastiques in Brussels. His
practical experience in art, in particular in the scope of sculpture,
grew remarkably, owning to his contacts with famous sculptors, such as
Philippe Łodzia-Brodski and Simon du Chastel (Head of the Sculpture
Center in Brussels)
In
the same period (i.e. By the end of nineties), Jacek Korbus was
admitted to Doctoral Studies in the Department of Theory of Culture
Dissemination at Maria Curie Skłodowska University in Lublin, where he
conducted research on sculpture in public space, duly considering any
publication available which could become of use in his PhD thesis.
The
PhD thesis written by Jacek Korbus, entitled: Functions of sculpture in
public space, constitutes an overwhelming proof of both erudition and
intellectual capability of the author.
The
author discusses various determinants of perception - related problems
concerning the structure of the analysed phenomena, along with
determinants connected with various trends in public sculpture
– both
in the past ( Antiquity, Gothic, Renaissance ) and in contemporary
times ( 20th century ), including public sculpture in Poland, Pursuing
his scientific goals assumed in the thesis, the author emphasised the
basis functions of sculpture in public space, which led him to
following conclusions:
-
sculpture in the city is a humanising factor
-
sculptural form is a carrier of humanistic value and a symbol of
existence, whereas the rapid growth of cities makes fight against
dehumanisation absolutely indispensable.
All
the above arguments and views were duly supported in the thesis by
relevant quotations from outstanding scientists and art theorists,
including B. Suchodolski, T. Kotarbiński, A. Wallis, Władysław
Tatarkiewicz, M. Eliade, F. Coplestone and K. Kumaniecki.
I
confirm, from my own experience, that institutional support for social
art education is now expressed in almost every European country, for
instance in the form of campaigns such as Sculpture for the city.
In
1998, cooperating with French Internet portal, Art Public, Jacek Korbus
established a Public Art Portal, still functioning, it is the only
Internet portal in Poland where people can exchange their views
concerning both artistic experience and scientific research, related to
the place of art in public space.
Korbus
extended his cooperation to other similar centres around the world, not
only in the scope of modern art and media related to creative activity,
but also in the scope of developement of multimedia communication.
The
works of Jacek Korbus have so far been displayed in nine individual
exhibitions and presented several times, as part of his artistic and
scientific relations in Paris, in Brussels and in the USA. In his
creative activity, he attempts to address contemporary issues. He does
not cut corners but always aims at unconventional solutions. He does
not experiment for the sake of experiment itself. In his PhD project,
he raises the questions of the sense and existence of art, of the
relation between individual creative practice and the persistence of
art, and of the message and mission of sculpture in public domain.
Finally, he also discusses the issue of how an individual
interpretation of a given piece of art may be facilitated, in line with
the recipient's preparation and predispositions.
During
the third – year of studies, Jacek Korbus participated in an
artistic
contest for an outdoor sculpture „Hyde Park” in
Lublin and was awarded
second prize. Already in that time his reflexive sensitivity was
directed towards the issues of human existence, and his creative
expression was vividly characterised by destruction and breakdown.
These
were the beginnings of his development as artist. Based on his
substantial experience, he has been currently working on the Way of the
Cross at the St. John the Baptist Basilica in Parczew, with the base of
100 x 80 meters, meant as a monumental spacial layout.
Since
we currently face a global demand for sculpture in public space, any
activity related to sculpture in public domain is, in my opinion, an
unquestionably precious contribution to the development of social
awareness connected with participation in the process of education
through art. The sense of social space is an unquestionable proof of
understanding of the world. I am certain that Jacek Korbus, with his
remarkable sensitivity, is deeply fixed in contemporary times,
constantly enriching his own personality.
Jacek
Korbus has been involved in didactic activity since 1999, initially at
the Faculty of Pedagogy and Psychology at Maria Curie Skłodowska
University in Lublin, in the scope of Animator and Culture Manager,
then at the University of Communication and Social Media in Warsaw, in
the scope of Internet presentation.
I
fully endorse the application for initiation of the qualification
process for the degree of doctor in the scope of plastic arts with
regards to Jacek Korbus. If he fails to get the chance to continue his
artistic development in Lublin, it will not only be his personal loss,
but will also prove detrimental to the whole artistic environment of
Lublin.
